What Makes Some Air Conditioners (and Heat Pumps) More Efficient Than Others? 

By this point you can tell that not all cooling systems are created equal – some are built to perform better than others. The key technological difference between high-efficiency and low-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps is the compressor that the system is fitted with. 

 

Compressor Technology 

  • Single-Stage Compressors operate at full capacity every time the system turns on. This all-or-nothing approach results in the system turning on and off more frequently, which consumes more energy, causes temperature swings, and leads to more wear and tear. Single-stage compressors are most often found in low-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps with low SEER2 ratings. 
  • Two-Stage Compressors can run at a lower speed (usually about 65% capacity) for longer durations, resulting in fewer on/off cycles. This leads to far less energy consumption, sustained comfort, and less wear and tear.  Two-stage compressors can always ramp up to full capacity when needed on the hottest summer days and are found in higher-scoring SEER2 cooling systems. 
  • Variable-Speed Compressors (also called inverter compressors) offer the highest efficiency and best comfort control. These systems can adjust their cooling output in small increments, down to about 30% capacity, and run almost continuously at the exact level needed to maintain consistent indoor comfort. Since they rarely shut off completely, they avoid the energy spikes that occur during start-up and deliver superior energy efficiency. Variable-speed compressors are typically found in the highest-rated SEER2 AC and heat pump systems. 

 

Other Factors That Influence Efficiency 

Besides the compressor technology, here are the other contributing factors that impact how much energy your cooling system consumes: 

  • Blower motor speeds (similar to compressor stages) 
  • Size & design of evaporator and condenser coils 
  • Refrigerant type
